Will have ANOTHER NEW City Hunter Movie !!!
APRIL 8, 2022:
Announcement, more so than a teaser of any kind, Youtube video for the NEW MOVIE for City Hunter!!
The NEW movie news was also shouted out to the world on the CH movie (Japanese) twitter account, the first tweets were showing
on my timeline as I was looking this morning (Apr 7 Pacific) and I was like, huh, what's going on?! My Japanese is limited, but I understood
getting something NEW, Kamiya Akira back as Ryo, Get Wild as the ending song... translate the tweets didn't help a whole lot.
Later in the day, CR news came across with overall, not a lot more info than had figured out but still helpful.
SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS NEWS!! Didn't think anything further would get since been awhile now since had heard anything since 2019 movie,
Shinjuku Private Eyes (mind you COVID-19 pandemic no help since 2020)... This new movie getting (in part) because 2022 is the 35th anniversary
of the first anime series, AND Apr 8, 1987 was the day the first episode aired.
The Official JP Movie site has the Youtube video showing when first go to the page (Apr 7, 2022).
If close it, the Shinjuku Private Eyes info is still there, for now.
WHEN the new movie will be out, the story, etc, UNKNOWN SO FAR.
Couple images from the announcement video (same video but with 2023 and new logo added Dec 2):
Did I mention I'm excited?! ^^;;
Ah, actually, that reminds me, ANN news from Mar 28, 2022, the manga is getting an English translation... again, by Coamix (Japanese company)
(which had tried back in early 2000s releasing an English version, I still have a couple of the books). The first 10 chapters can be read for free at moment.
It's on the MangaHot app, or can also read it on their website.
Excited about this too, but I'd much rather have it released as books and not just digitally. *sigh*.
DEC 2, 2022:
The official site is updated to be just for the NEW movie which will be out in 2023 (no further date known so far).
Logo, if not the title too (?), is CH The Movie The Final Chapter Begins . . . . which I would assume means we get more than ONE movie, ne?
Site has image of Ryo (Tsukasa Hojo new art) looking determined and bit worse for wear (image below) with Tokyo behind him.
Not much info so far. Get WIld by TM Network confirmed (back again ^^) as the ED song.
Original seiyuu for Ryo, Kaori, Saeko, Umibozu and Miki are back (Kamiya Akira, Ikura Kazue, Asagami YoukoGenda Tesshou, Koyama Mami) !
FEB 22, 2023:
Movie will be out Fall 2023! Title: City Hunter: Tenshi no Namida with Katakana of Angel Dust above it. And still the subtext (in English) The Final Chapter Begins.
Kodama Kenji (been involved with CH anime since 1987) is the director.
Short trailer (way more tease than reveal) released and a revised key visual. Can see it and other new info on the Official JP Movie site.
ANN news says going revolve around Ryo's past, and the death of his partner Makimura Hideyuki. Angel Dust is a drug.
JUNE 13, 2023:
LOTS of news!! Official movie webiste check out for character info (descriptions, seiyuu), music info, new trailer, new poster (below) etc.
Movie will be out (in Japan) Friday Sept 8, 2023
In the new trailer (YouTube) can hear a bit of the OP song, a NEW song by TM Network, "Whatever Comes".
New characters for the movie are in the trailer, and not so new: even Cat's Eye (the 3 Kisugi sisters) are in the movie.
Characters include Angie (seiyuu: Sawashiro Miyuki) who is Ryo's new client, and Kaibara Shin (Horiuchi Kenyuu) (main bad guy, has history with Ryo).
ANN info says Kaibara the one who raised Ryo (orphaned when his parents died in plane crash (In South America?) when he was a child) as a warrior.
Couple more bad guys, part of the Wetworks assassination team, are Pirarucu (Seki Tomokazu) and Espada (Kimura Subaru).
MARCH 26, 2024:
Ryo's birthday and get news of Angel Dust release (by Aniplex) on DVD/Blu-ray (in Japan) which will be July 31, 2024. Official JP Movie site's page.
LImited first press edition as well as regular edition (DVD and Blu-ray). Limited one has script, a second disc (uncertian what is ON it), special art box, etc.
And as is generlaly the case, depending on what vendor order from, there are different BONUS items with the limited edition version.
Amazon Japan has TWO different bonus versions listed (March 27): A4 clearfile with pouch, and the more expensive one also has a mousepad (and something else?).
Bigger question is whether Discotek has the licence for Angel Dust movie or not... Private Eyes by Discotek came out May 2020 (and JP release on disc was Oct 2019).

City Hunter Movie out in 2019 !!!
MARCH 19, 2018:
WOW, I so did not think would get anymore City Hunter!!!!!!!!!! Beyond stunned to have seen a retweet for the City Hunter Movie 2019 news today.
Jaw is still on the floor.
Seiyuu cast is the SAME (WHEW), at least for Ryo and Kaori: Kamiya Akira and Ikura Kazue. Hope the rest of cast for seiyuu will be intact as well.
Wonder what the story could be? There's no new City Hunter material, besides the OAD? There's definitely parts of the manga that haven't been
covered, especially the last arc. . . The last 3 TV Specials (movies) were mostly AO material so this new film could be the same. . .
Official Japanese site
Get Wild was playing in the short video clip (tweet and on the site), which is mostly showing Shinjuku nad the R&K new illustration Hojo did.
Crunchyroll news has translated more of the information from the official site/tweets: Setting is modern day Shinjuku. Will be in theatres early 2019.
Sunrise doing the work. Kodama Kenji, director for TV series 1-3 for CH is listed as general director.
So now to sit and wait for more info through this year. 100 tonne hammer excited!!
Come 2019 it will be 20 years since last special, which still hasn't had a North American release. Hope maybe Crunchyroll can get this movie.
Doesn't seem likely a company (Sentai eg) would licence it for disc release. =[
AUG 2, 2018:
Feb 8, 2019 is when the movie will be out!! Short trailer which reveals nothing for the story is out plus a poster for the movie
Saeko, Miki and Umibozu's seiyuu are the original cast. Get Wild by TM Network is still being used...
ANN article with teaser video embedded. CR's version of the news
There's a XYZ board in Shinjuku key ring and special movie card/ticket and some other items with advance ticket sales
or something (Japanese fail). See official JP site or twitter. . .
DEC 12, 2018:
Some more City Hunter movie news and a new trailer: https://youtu.be/CRFrmaZa1OY
Lame title though: Gekijouban City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes (City Hunter the Movie: Shinjuku Private Eyes)
Yup, Get Wild by TM Network will be the ED. Stick with a classic ^^;
Poster art, unh, making Ryo look YOUNGER than he did in season 1 of the anime. oO Kaori, Saeko, Miki, Umibozu and 3 new characters also in the poster
3 new characters:
Iitoyo Marie as Shindou Ai, a model and female college student who hires Ryo as a bodyguard (no new plot there ^^)
Yamadera Kouichi as Mikuni Shinji, Kaori's childhood friend (Unh-oh Ryo)
Ohtsuka Houchu as Vince Englert, a mysterious arms dealer
I hope the "move the setting to present-day Shinjuku" doesn't mean it's a "reboot" and ignore the existing anime. ~__~
APRIL, 2019:
The movie has been quite a hit in Japan since it's release. It was 4th (among ALL movies) on opening weekend in Japan.
It passed the 1.5 billion yen mark as of April 14.
Anime Boston is showing the movie (subbed?) (Apr 20) and has the key staff at the con ANN
Apr 19, 2019 WOW!! Thank-you Discotek! ANN
Discotek licenced ALL of the City Hunter anime including the 2019 movie Shinjuku Private Eyes!
Sadly no info yet on WHEN any of it will be coming out. DVDs only presume? There's been ONE Blu-ray release (Aniplex) for the series so far
(Jan 30, 2019) in Japan for TV series 1 (51eps) and other sets are supposed to come out too. Blu-ray version I don't know how well
it can be improved since TV series started in 1987... STILL I'M SO EXCITED!!
I only got part of the ADV releases of CH because their translation sucked. And they never released the CH '99 special.
So been 20 years waiting for an official release. I worked on a fansub for it back in 1999 with local anime club. Saw one other fansub of it as well.
MAY, 2020:
Blu-ray (sub only and is NOT ADV's version, whew) of City Hunter S1 Ep1-26 came out Feb 25. S1 Ep27-51 will be out June 30, 2020.
No dates yet for S2 and the rest of CH from Discotek.
City Hunter Shinjuku Private Eyes Blu-ray (sub and dub) came out end of April (RightStuf shipped from) although May 26
wasn't supposed to be out until.
May 7: Crunchyroll has CH1 Ep1-51 (sub) streaming now. Discotek's version. Utterly unexpected! oO
May 14: Crunchyroll added CH2 other day, and today will be adding everything else except the 2019 movie! oO WOW!
If you want to watch City Hunter in the order it came out in Japan it's: City Hunter, City Hunter 2, .357 Magnum Movie, City Hunter 3,
the 2 OVAs (not movies) Bay City Wars and Million Dollar Conspiracy, City Hunter '91, TV Special Secret Service (1996), TV Special
Goodbye My Sweetheart (1997), and the 1999 TV Special -- finally 21 years later, official release for this!! And then the 2019 movie.
May 28, 2020: Woot, now even the 2019 movie can be watched on Crunchyroll. Well it WAS the sub version. . . don't know when it got changed to being
just the DUB version oO (seeing Feb 6, 2023).
Rest of CH released on disc by Discotek:
July-Sept 2021: Discotek released as two sets (Blu-ray) for Ciry Hunter 2.
March-April 2022: Discotek released (Blu-ray) City Hunter 3 and City Hunter '91.
AND (drum roll please) on Jan 31, 2023: Discotek now released (Blu-ray, 2 discs) all the pre-2019 "specials": .357 Magnum Movie, 2 OVAs Bay City Wars and
Million Dollar Conspiracy, TV Special Secret Service (1996), TV Special Goodbye My Sweetheart (1997), and FIRST TIME ever on disc in North America,
the 1999 TV Special, (their title for it) Death of the Vicious Criminal Ryo Saeba.

May 25, 2015:
Due to the manga's 30th anniversary (1995 started), a new (although this isn't the first time (20th anniversary) the manga got a re-release
with all new cover artwork and other goodies) 12 volume (err so 2-3 volumes (original version was 35) each) version of the manga came out
with some new artwork and new interview(s?) with Hojo.
1600Yen+tax per each volume which will start coming out in July 18, 2015. How long before all 12 are out, do not know (as of May 25, 2015).
Kicker is if you get all 12 volumes, you will be able to get an ALL NEW ANIME on DVD (so region 2 coding): "Ryo's Proposal"
Err, such a happy event hasn't happened in the CH manga (sort of ish in Vol35) so title is misleading, or the OAD will be new story??
ANN reported (May 23) that it would be a NEW seiyuu cast and my instant reaction to that was RAGE. There is no City Hunter
without Kamiya Akira and Ikura Kazue as Ryo and Kaori!!
BUT ANN GOT IT WRONG. Original image
CR reported (news item by a Japanese native) that the seiyuu cast is the original (as in UNCHANGED) cast. Whew.
Still, have to spend $$$$ to get this DVD. *sigh* Something as much as I want to do, cannot.
The OAD didn't come out until May 2016. I have seen it for auction on Yahoo Japan for 10,000Yen if really lucky.
If anyone has been lucky enough to have seen this, I'd love to know about it!

BACK IN 1999:
Mokkori alert! Yes folks, Saeba Ryo, the hentai among hentai, was making women scream
in fear and joy once again! And I don't mean because of an American company's releases...
On April 23, 1999 at 9pm in Japan, a new City Hunter TV Special aired
There was some coverage in the March-May issues of Animedia of the special.
My reaction to learning ADV had changed Ryo's name (and others) in the dub!
Didn't they screw things up enough?! /_\
Some pertinent information:
Opening song: Illusion City by sex MACHINEGUNS
Ending song: Get Wild by TM Network
Characters: Ryo, Kaori, Saeko, Umibozu, Miki
The client: Asagi (Asagiri?) Sayaka: Announcer for a TV station run by a media mogul witnesses the murder of the station manager.
Hires Ryo to protect her from the killer.
Main bad guy: Jack Douglas
Japanese title is: City Hunter Kinkyuu Namachyuukei?! Kyouakuhan Saeba Ryo no Saigo
Translation of the title (may still not be accurate):
City Hunter Emergency Live Broadcast?! The End of Vicious Criminal Saeba Ryo
Translation I'd had was: City Hunter Emergency Live Broadcast?! Saeba Ryo's Last Terrible Offense
Discotek (May 14, 2020 sub on CR 1st made available) going with title translation seen in ANN entry for years: City Hunter: Death of the Vicious Criminal Ryo Saeba
Saigo means one's last moment; one's death; one's end and Ryo definitely doesn't die, so "end of" instead of "death of" makes more sense to me.
* From the June (1999) Animedia *
The CD soundtrack (mostly BGM) is available in Japan now from Youmex, 3059Yen.
AND. . . the LD/video of the special will hit the stores MAY 21, 1999.
92 minutes, 6800Yen, doesn't say what company is releasing it.
More info...
Wai, wai! Someone knew I didn't want to wait long to see this! ^_^
Especially after three friends got friends in Japan to tape (set VCR) the special, only to have a baseball game run 1/2hr overtime! o_O
Ok, here's an idea of what the story is about!
Mega City Television is part of a powerful media empire run by Jack Douglas who controls most of the
television braodcasts shown in Japan through his private satellite network. One of his key personnel
(not sure what his title is!) is killed for information he had. What secrets had he known and who didn't
want him sharing them with whom?
His execution was meant to look as a suicide, however, Asagi (Asagiri?) Sayaka, a Mega City News announcer,
saw the murder happen. Fearing for her life, she leaves an XYZ message on the board in Shinjuku Station.
Short on jobs yet again for some time (with the Japanese economic recession not helping either), Kaori
is willing to take the offer even if it is from a beauty. Ryo's reaction is typical. :)
Of course, no protection job is ever typical for City Hunter. Keeping Sayaka safe starts to become
a challenge when a newscast airs showing Ryo kidnapping Sayaka. Now the police (enter Saeko)
are after Ryo. To add to the chase, some thugs decide Ryo will be worth a hefty reward if caught.
Someone else also wants a piece of Ryo: Umibozu. Seems he's had enough of being called Umi-chan...
And Kaori's hammer (as always) isn't far away to keep Ryo from mishandling their client. ^^
The guy the killer works for created the fake newscast. Was this his way of just getting Ryo
out of the way in order to get to Sayaka? Or is he interested in eliminating Ryo too? Why?
What's the reason for this deadly game? Watch and see!
Now that I've watched the whole thing, I suppose I could put up a review... Nah.
Safe to say you can understand most of what's going on even without knowing much Japanese (like me).
I enjoyed it very much. I think it's far better than "Good-bye My Sweetheart" and "Secret Service".
The opening song is crap (unless buzzing guitars and grating voices appeals to you) but the sequence
to go with it was fabulous (lots of manga pic brought to "life").
My three wishes:
1) This had better not be the last one.
2) Don't take 2 years to get the next one out.
3) ADV had better NOT have the licence to this!
Ok, I did a mini-review. ^^
********************
Come to Aug 2004: 1) & 2) have proven false. Instead of more City Hunter, Tsukasa Hojo gives fans Angel Heart... I still can't
forgive him for killing Kaori!!! -_____- (Even if Angel Heart is an AU to CH) So much for "City Hunter Forever" at the end of manga 35.
3) hasn't been proven false... yet. And never will happen, whew.
Return to Main
Fancy the CH pics? Want for yourself? Can't stop you, but have the decency to ask or say thanks at least. /_\
