Detective Conan: Video Release List
Wondering where exactly to find your favourite Conan episodes on video (VHS, LD, DVD, Blu-ray) ?
Each episode that's come out in Japan for the TV series and the movies on video is catalogued here. Well, nearly, I think there's a few specials
and promo type items I have missed (don't have knowledge about).
When it started, the TV episodes (and the movies) always came out first on videotape only. The VHS versions
were meant to be rented out. The tapes usually only had 3 episodes. While you could buy the tapes,
general consumers tended to wait for the digital media release that to come out, usually, much later.
The predecessor (and in some ways still superior) to DVD was laserdisc. DVDs for Conan have
only been coming out since 2000, everything before that came out on LD. The LDs & DVDs
each have 4 episodes worth of material. Hence the confusion in matching what volume
an episode is on VHS and LD/DVD since the same volumes don't have usually have the same episodes.
When it started, the episodes that came out on VHS were about one "season" (ie, year) behind the current episodes
on TV. The DVD (LD) release was nearly another year behind the VHS releases. VHS & DVD
volumes came out about once a month, but there wasn't a release every month. The DVD releases
stopped entirely at the end of Part 9 for an entire year. From Part 10 to most of Part 14, the DVD releases were
2 volumes per month. So the gap was closed! First (late 2005 into 2006) the VHS tapes got within ~30 episodes
of what was airing on TV and then the DVD releases (with Part 14) caught up to the VHS releases. And as technology
always advances, the VHS releases were dropped, and so only had rental and sale version on DVD. The DVD rental
used to come out before the sale copy, but they both come out at the same time now (been some years like this now).
The more recent DVD Parts usually have 10 volumes, but overall, the episodes on DVD remain about 8-9 months behind
from when they aired on TV. As of 2011, the only Blu-ray releases were for the movies. But now (Jan 2015)
some select episodes are coming out on BD, although they are not (impossible to be true for early episodes) HD.
Conan video releases are divided into Parts. A given part should *NOT* be equated to a season.
Although there are anime series that start in Jan (winter), April (spring), July (summer), Sept-Oct (fall), some series,
like Conan, run year round with various weeks where no new episode is aired. Could say that January of a given
year is the start for Conan since it started in Jan 1996. The earlier Parts had ~30 episodes total while there's
around 40 episodes (more in earlier years, it's slowly been decreasing as the years go by (had 40 eps in 2010)) of Conan
air each year.

NOTE: April, 2021: While the Magic File stories which were done specifically to be a pre-story or after story to a given movie, the SS OVAs
mostly weren't. I didn't notice many particular ties, but in some of the SS OVAs there are (not so obvious, mostly) links/ties to a given movie.
2000: SSOVA1: Title: Conan X Kid X Yaiba 23 minutes *
* Cool! This one does have a manga connection. Except it was only Kid VS Yaiba, no Conan (pre-dates Conan manga). Story is in the
new (Sept 2004) book that has the first chapter(s) for Conan, Majyuku Kaitou (Kid), Yaiba as well as some of Aoyama's shorter works
(which were animated). EG1, EG2
Form was offered first in SS issue #46 (late Fall 2000 out)
2002: SSOVA2: Title: 16 Suspects 25 minutes: Form offered in SS #7 (Jan 16, 2002) through #13 (2002/02/27). I got my VHS in Jan of 2002
Story (few ties to 4th movie, Captured in Her Eyes) is set at a villa Shiratori has in Karuizawa... a precious bottle of wine in his collection
gets destroyed. . . And the culprit of the crime (not intentionally) is a regular good guy character, a certain high school detective. . .
Get a flashback to Shinichi and Ran at his parents' villa.
2003: SSOVA3: Title: Conan to Heiji to Kieta Shonen (Conan & Heiji & the Vanished Boy):
24 minutes. Form offered in SS #12 (Mar 12, 2003) through #25 (2003/05/21). 960Yen had to mail in with the form.
I don't think I got my tape until June ... only time it took past the final deadline before the OVA episode came out.
Story (7th movie Crossroad in the Ancient Capital relates to (pre-story of sorts) set in Osaka. Heiji invited Conan and Ran to Osaka.
C&H get caught up finding a missing boy, Satoshi, whose friends are (weird) "clones" for Ayumi/Genta/Mitsuhiko oO
2004: SSOVA4: Title: Meitantei Conan to Kid to Crystal Mother (Detective Conan & (Kaitou) Kid & the Crystal Mother)
25 minutes. Form offered in SS #14 (Mar 3, 2004) through #25 (2004/05/19). 1050Yen had to mail in with the form.
Adaptation of a Magic Kaito manga which pre-dates Conan manga so obviously doesn't match the MK version.
2005: SSOVA5: Title: Hyouteki wa Kogoro! Shounen Tanteidan Maruchichousa = Target is Kogoro! The Detective Boy's Secret Investigation
23 minutes. Form offered in SS #17 (Mar 9, 2005) through #26 (2005/05/25). 1050Yen had to mail in with the form.
2006: SSOVA6: Title: Kieta Daiya wo Oe! Conan & Heiji VS Kid = Hunt for (Pursuit of) the Vanished (Disappeared) Diamond! Conan & Heiji Vs Kid
Should be great! And Heiji might finally see Kaitou Kid up close and personal!
This year's original story will be out on DVD (region 2 of course) !! Form to send in will be in SS issues 15 - 25

Recent SS had 2 page ad for the OVA. From images in and little bit understood from story, it's a What If... story, and has to be a dream.
Haibara gives an ill Conan a new antidote to APTX4869 but he collapses from it... when he wakes, he thinks he's changed back to Shinichi
and goes back to school... but no, it's actually been 10 years! Tanteidan (including Haibara) are in high school.
Conan is now really Shinichi - again. Is life good? And how's Ran coping?

2010: SSOVA10: Title: Kid in Trap Island

Kid is after a jewel called Tears of Artemis being kept in a hotel on an isolated island.
Of course Conan (and the Tanteidan (although seems sans Haibara if DVD cover anything to go by)) are at the hotel. But besides another
showdown between the 2, they should be careful of the traps on the island.
2011: SSOVA11: Title: Rondon kara no Maruhi Shirei = Secret (or Classified) Order(s) from London.
Form to send in will be in SS issues 20-28. Cost is 980Yen + fee, so total is 1100Yen. Have until June 23
to get the form (+ payment) in by. The DVD will start going out in May.

Ties in with the case in London (Files 743-752 = M71F3-M72F1, anime 616-621) I wonder? Dunno... But focus of story is on Haibara.

We will supposedly learn about some secret of her past, from when she really was a kid. Okiya's involved somehow in the story.

2012: SSOVA12: Title: Ekusukabaa no Kiseki = Miracle of Excalibur which from the promo image looks as though this will be an insertion of
Conan (and the Tanteidan) into a short story of Aoyama's. A girl named Minae is the main character in the story. Baseball theme.
Form to send in will be in SS issues 19-27 (Apr 11 to June 6). Cost is 980Yen + fee so total is 1100Yen.
Have until June 20 to get the form (+ payment) in by. The DVD will start going out in May.

2013: At this point, mid May, the SS OVA mail in would've started to have been mailed out in previous years... no sign of an OVA
so far whatsoever. Sad if last year's OVA was the last one done... Also no sign of a Magic Case File (get via 7-11) coming out this year
so far either. Maybe getting the vs Lupin III movie in December is compensation.
2014: No SS OVA
2015: Vol 86 of the manga (Apr 15 (17?) out) will have a limited edition with an OVA on DVD running
90 (92?) minutes for 2980Yen. OVA is the 2 hour (with commercials) Special (20th anniversary project) from Dec 26, 2014:

In April 2021 I only realized I didn't have these on this page. My main DCN page where I put info of releases and such I did have some details about
these special releases, so gathering the info to put here plus some other details, but not EVERY detail.

The Magic File volumes (1-5 and "6" which was labeled as Bonus File, NOT specifically as a Magic File (Why? No clue) were sold at 7-11 locations in Japan.
Each DVD for Magic File 1-5 has PPV (Pay Per View) material, access to certain Conan episodes. This JP fansite has the PPV episodes per volume listed out.
The OVA episode on the Magic File volumes have not been collected together in a volume on DVD or Blu-ray thus far (April 2021).
However, each OVA episode was released on the limited edition DVD/Blu-ray release for the corresponding movie the OVA is related to.
Magic File 1 does NOT have an OVA, just some previously released episodes.

a prank at the end involving swithching the gifts of Ran (for Shinichi) and Kogoro (for Yoko-chan): Niigata ~ Tokyo Omiyage Kyousoukyoku (Capriccio)

Dec 23, 2011: 5 DVDs with price of 3150Y each come out. 2 different 1hour specials are on each volume. WIDE range of early
and more recent episodes. Limited time for which these DVDs are available to buy. The 5 DVD episode selections are:
Ep118 with Ep184, Ep490 with Ep515, Ep11 with Ep52, Ep449 with Ep487, Ep356 with Ep208.
The selection themed DVDs continue... now there will be a Soccer Selection DVD coming out November 21, 2012 (same day
as 11th Striker comes out). Episodes are 10, 130-131, 279-280 for 3150Yen.
2013: Why these specials? April 5 (for how long?), 3 of the DVD volumes will be special priced at 2100Yen each.
The three volumes are Part 7 Vol4, Part 13 Vol9 and Part 16 Vol5. Each has a 2hr special episode on it.
2014 is 20th anniversary of the manga. Another April and some more DVDs at reduced prices (again for how long? Seems as long as

2010: Magic Kaito: Adaptation to Anime:
In 2010 series has 4 manga volumes (plus few other chapters including 2 new ones (Ch29-30) in Aug 2011)) .
Magic Kaito came out (1988 for Vol1) before Meitantei Conan. Kid was rather different to how we know him in Meitantei Conan...
April 17th (2010) was first airing of the potentially one-off or series. First episode has Kuroba Kaito learning that Kaitou Kid was his dad...
Now come to August, 2011: Whole month of Kaito! Anime and manga. Get Magic Kaito episodes 2 and 3 (2 chapters of Vol1 used
as basis of the episodes). Get a DCN 2 parter with Kid as well. Get Magic Kaito Treasured Edition of the manga starting to come out.
New cover art, colour pages of Kid art (not new), and the limited version has the DVD (2350Y) of Kaito episode 1. Treasure Edition 2
is out Sept 16, 2011. Manga only or a DVD (Ep 2&3 on it) limited edition will have (2400Y).
And more Magic Kaito episodes to come for 2011 it seems. 3 more! Sept 24 is the first one. Oct 29 is the 2nd... and Dec 24 for the 3rd.
Treasure Edition 3 comes out Nov 16, 2011 but the DVD (limited version, 2400Yen) doesn't have a 2011 Magic Kaito episode.
It has SS OVA 1 (Conan vs Kid vs Yaiba). Treasure Edition 4 comes out Dec 14, 2011 and again the limited one with DVD
(2400Yen) doesn't have MK 2011 episode, but DCN Ep76 (First time Kid seen in DCN).

There's not any images yet. Vol1 is 1-3 (ONBD-2579) and Vol2 is 4-6 (ONBD-2580).
More DVDs will be needed as got Ep9 on Sept 29 and Ep10 is airing Nov 3, 2012. Yup Vol3 is 7-9 (ONBD-2581).
Vol3 comes out 12/12/21. Vol4 (final?) comes out Jan 25, 2013 with Eps 10-12 (ONBD-2582)... 11 and 12 hadn't even aired yet

Magic Kaito series Blu-ray box set: 3 disc set due out Sept 26, 2014 (was limited to 1412 copies). Special case, original artwork for the jacket,
